After a down year in 2020, adoptions are on the rise in the Rochester region. Children Awaiting Parents has overcome some of the obstacles of the pandemic to facilitate quite a few new forever families in 2021.

CAP's research uncovered the hard facts as to who was remaining in foster care the longest: older youth, youth of non-White cultures/races, and sibling sets -- many of whom have challenging "behaviors" or disabilities. “Foster to Forever: CAP Challenge for the 125 Thousand” seeks to get as many people as possible to collectively log at least 125,000 miles – one mile for each child currently in Foster Care in the U.S.

In March, Children Awaiting Parents' Executive Director Lauri McKnight was honored to be guest speaker at Worth More Nation's annual fundraising fashion show. Founder Sandy Arena had a conversation with her about children - particularly the needs of girls - currently or formerly in foster care.

With a community challenge, Children Awaiting Parents hopes to underscore the difficulty of placing foster children in permanent homes.

Of the 440,000 children currently in foster care in the United States, approximately 125,000 are available and waiting for adoption. Many of them have been waiting years for a permanent, loving adoptive family. To help raise awareness for the children and the need for adoptive families, Children Awaiting Parents (CAP) is launching a “challenge for a cause,” encouraging communities to join them in a three-month community event.

Children Awaiting Parents, Inc.'s (CAP) Executive Director, Lauri McKnight, caught up with CAP Board Chair Lorisa LaRocca to find out more about this talented and busy woman. Lorisa is a Partner in Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP's Labor & Employment Department, where she is the Practice Leader of the firm's Employment & Counseling group. In 2020, she succeeded Maryjane Link as Chair of CAP's Board of Directors.

November is National Adoption Month, highlighting the need for adoptive parents and celebrating children who have found forever families. The pandemic has had an impact on the number of adoptions locally. But Jeff and Rob Allen just recently finalized the adoption of their son, Charlie.

With the help of CAP, Jeff Allen and his partner officially welcomed their son Charlie to their family in August of 2020. The agency worked closely with Allen throughout the process, and as Allen says, "they wanted it to work as badly as we did."

Children Awaiting Parents continues to help children seeking adoption find their forever homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our annual Home, Heart & Harmony gala is our largest fundraiser, supporting CAP operations to continue services for children to find those loving, forever families and grow programs that aid community youth.

A one-man version of A Christmas Carol, starring Kim Tenreiro, begins at 2 p.m. Dec. 8 at Comedy at the Carlson, 50 Carlson Road. The show is a benefit for CAP (Children Awaiting Parents).

At CAP's annual gala, Susan Schoff and Eric Brown of Lacuna Links, partnered with Children Awaiting Parents to assist them in finding adoptive families for children in foster care who wait the longest. 50% of all proceeds from their adoption pendant will directly support CAP's efforts.

More than 60% of children in foster care spend two to five years in the system before being adopted, and nearly 20% spend five or more years awaiting adoption. Children Awaiting Parents (CAP) is a local nonprofit organization that has dedicated more than 40 years to finding homes for children awaiting adoption.
